The Indian in the Cupboard

The Indian in the Cupboard has several different book covers as well as covers for the audio and movie versions of the story. Here are a few ideas to do with the cover illustrations.

1. One great introduction to the novel is to have students predict what the book is going to be about by looking at the covers.
2. After reading the story, have students write an argument essay claiming why the cover they like the best illustrates the overall feel of the story.
3. Another idea is to have students write a compare and contrast essay. What do all the covers have in common? Do they all contain certain elements in the story -- Indian, the key, the horse, and the cupboard?
